Use these questions to compare roofing companies, written scopes, installation details and warranties

01

Ask questions that reveal the complete job

A metal roof is a long-term part of the home, and the interview should go deeper than price and color. The best questions reveal who is responsible, what exact system is included and how critical details will be handled.

  • How long have you specialized in metal roofing
  • Who will supervise my installation
  • Which exact manufacturer and profile are included
  • Will primary fasteners be exposed or concealed
  • How will thermal movement be accommodated
  • What underlayment is specified
02

Ask how existing conditions are handled

The contractor should explain whether the current roof will be removed, how the deck will be evaluated and how repairs are authorized and priced. Ask how ventilation will be assessed and what happens if roof geometry requires a change.

  • How are damaged deck areas documented
  • How are valleys and low-slope transitions addressed
  • How will chimneys, walls and penetrations be flashed
03

Ask for warranty details in writing

Product and workmanship warranties are not the same. A manufacturer generally covers defined product issues under written terms. The contractor's workmanship warranty addresses installation. Ask who handles a concern, what is excluded and whether labor is included.

04

Ask to see comparable completed work

A gallery is useful when it shows real projects by the company. Look for roofs with similar profiles and complexity, and inspect close views of transitions and trim as well as aerial views.
